In General: If you're new, you might wanna know that Jackie is the tiny chick with the lines in her hair. She has a refrigerator that talks, but only to her...The focus of the strip is not the fridge, and sometimes isn't even Jackie. I've got a small handful of characters who hang out together. I'm not out for belly laughs here, but maybe a smile as the result of a dialogue between two of the characters. Jackie Touessant She's the second shortest character at about 5'3". She has a motocycle license but no car license. She's a technical writer who moved from a small suburb of Quebec to find work in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. At 27 years and holding, she's as old as I am [almost]. She speaks fluent French and has a slow-burn temper First appearance: June 26, 2000 The Fridge It's not a he or a she, it's an it. Some of its opinions are male, some are female and some can only come from an inanimate object. Its total impartiality is what makes it seem to have opinions of its own, but if you look closely, it's just making statements and letting Jackie do all the inference. First appearance: June 26, 2000 Ada Fochs Ada is probably the most dynamic character in Jackie's Fridge. Named after my cousin, she's got the most lust for life. She also can't spell "worcesterchire". Ada is Scottish, black, and has naturally blonde hair. Although more confident and self-reliant than Jackie by far, she's gotten there the hard way, by dealing directly with other people's pre- and mis-conceptions about her. This has left her just a little cynical about people in general, but she'd do anything for her friends. First appearance: July 5, 2000 Melissa Yokote Melissa Yokote can't see, but she's never let it slow her down. She keeps active in the community, volunteers at the library, plays cello in local orchestras, surfs the 'net and bakes rather well. She's 34 years old and married to Ken Yokote, a man whom she loves, but only gets to see for about a week out of the year, because his job keeps him on the road worldwide. Melissa is genuinely loving and pleasant, but when she's depressed, she never lets it show. And she's very very depressed much of the time. First appearance: July 14, 2000 Billi Billi is Melissa's seeing eye dog. Well...was. I've written Billi out of the strip for reasons I'll go into in the annotations. First appearance: July 14, 2000
Lance Lance, the walking libido. Like Billi, he's since been written out of Jackie's Fridge. A casualty of being redundant, I guess. First appearance: July 21, 2000 Shannon Miller Shannon Miller is actually based on Webmaster Shannon Traska, but in name, appearance and temperment only. When his wife Carey read the Jackie's Fridge strips, she glared at him and said, "This isn't based on real life, is it?" Shannon's an honest, nice guy who happens to have fallen hard for the wrong woman: Melissa. He's a hopeless romantic, a softhearted bloke and a sucker for a good casserole. He'd do anything to make Melissa smile. First appearance: July 21, 2000 Victor Victor had a last name, I just have to find where I wrote it down. He's only appeared in the Beethoven storyline, but he will be taking the place of Carey (the Hobb's Court on-site manager) and Lance (but not as a "walking libido"). He's currently in redesign, as I'm overhauling his personality and touching up his character design. He'll still be confident, witty and talented....and it all goes out the window when Jackie walks into the room. Look for him when the new strips start in 2001. First appearance: August 9, 2000 Brandy Edwards Brandy Edwards is Melissa's twin sister, but only in appearance. Her tough, sarcastic exterior hides a woman who's...well, tough and sarcastic. Melissa was the favoured child in the family, and Brandy developed a little differently than her sibling. Thing is, she thinks the world of Melissa, and would do anything for her sister. Anything. Everybody else, she uses like Kleenex. Don't cross her. First appearance: September 8, 2000 Virginia "Gin" DeCamp Virginia "Gin" DeCamp is the youngest Jackie's Fridger, and the only character who's shorter than Jackie. She's around 4-5 years old, and her parents rarely remember they have a daughter. Gin usually hangs out with Melissa, but sometimes you'll see her with Jackie or Ada. Everybody at the Hobb's Court complex likes her and takes turns looking after her. She's got an auxiliary room at Melissa's place. All she needs now are parents. Once I get the outline done, you should see an interesting Gin-based storyline--hopefully by next summer. First appearance: October 9, 2000 Lou & Bippy Lou & Bippy are
apparently the only two people who run the local Bitchin'
Kitchen. Lou is in charge--she's been there for
eight years, after all. The more jaded of the two,
Lou contents herself with being nasty and sarcastic to
many of their patrons. Her motto: "They don't
pay me enough to care." Bippy is just happy to
keep moving, and she's almost always smiling and
happy. Lou has known Ada since high school, and met
Jackie through her. First appearance: December 29, 2000 Pig Not just any
guinea pig, this one comes straight from the bowels of
Hell First cameo appearance: November 6, 2000 Caryn McKinnon Caryn works in Jackie's building, but for a different company. She's a little loony and goes by the nickname PsychoBlonde. The day Jackie met her, Caryn admitted she thought Jackie was cute, and wanted to know if Jackie would consider dating her. Jackie turned her down, and after a panel-long mourning period, Caryn was back to her old tricks. Caryn still gets together with Jackie for lunch--she says so the two of them can stave off the unwanted advances of Carl Thompson, but it's a well known fact that Jackie always has chocolate she's willing to share. Caryn has a soft spot for cute things with sharp points, obscure new wave music and online comics, such as this one. More to come as they're introduced...
